MONDAYS October 14th and 28th NAMI aka The National Alliance on Mental Illness offers a confidential peer-led support group free of charge for adults. NAMI-trained facilitators lead the group and focus is placed on empathy, a sense of community and productive discussion. Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 6:00 and end at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are held in the Konnie room and those in attendance are asked to enter through the side door. WEDNESDAYS October 2nd Ridge Readers Book Club – This month’s selection is The Women by Kristen Hannah. Read the book and then join in lively discussion from 1:15 – 3:00 p.m. in the Conference Room. Next month’s selection will be The RoseCode by Kate Quinn. Newcomers always welcome. October 2nd and 16th This is when the Hobby Hangout meets. Running from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., this is a chance for artists, crafters, makers, gamers, builders, thinkers and others who find joy in creating to bring their supplies and enjoy working together on their various projects. Hobby Hangout meets in the Konnie Room and is open to those 18 and older. The library has an assortment of free materials and tools to use along with plenty of space for people to spread out and enjoy themselves. October 9th Shelton McMurphey Johnson House – Enjoy local history? Fascinated by Victorian houses? Love a good mystery? The Shelton McMurphey Johnson House, completed in 1888, has stood as a defining landmark in Eugene for 136 years. This exciting presentation about the house, it’s residents, ongoing programs and upcoming events will answer your questions about the Castle on the hill. THURSDAYS October 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st Walk & Talk meets up every Thursday morning in the courtyard at 9:00 a.m. and participants then go for a walk that ends at 10:00 a.m. A path is chosen as is a pace and discussion centers on what those in attendance are currently reading and the neighborhood. Falling is our worst enemy and you can prevent that from happening to you. Learn some Tai Chi exercises that will strengthen your body and bring you peace of mind. Free, donations welcome. 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. SUNDAY October 6th Writer’s and Wine – A literary event and fundraiser, this takes place from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. Author Bob Welch will speak about his newest work, Seven Summers (And a few Bummers), relating to his decade-long pursuit of hiking the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail. Refreshments from Broadway Grill, wine from Sylvan Winery and Get-Away raffle tickets are included. Optional Fun Raffle tickets are available for purchase. Library programs aren’t just for adults. At Fern Ridge Library, there is plenty for kids from preschool through high school to enjoy. Clubs, crafts, stories, it’s all there. There even the opportunity to read to a dog. TUESDAY October 1st, 29th Sing & Sign – Sing & Sign is a fun environment to interact with other families through singing and dancing together. Classes are best for ages 0-5 and are structured to encourage the use of early sign language, kindergarten readiness, body movement and rhythm exploration. This program runs for approximately 30 minutes and is immediately followed by Nursing Nook at 11:45 a.m. 11:00 a.m. in the Konnie Room. October 8th Elementary Explorers LEGO Club – A program for kids’ kindergarten through fifth grade that focuses on ingenuity and creativity. At LEGO Club children are challenged to build to a theme and work on developing the following skills – teamwork & communication, patience & organization, constructive problem solving & lateral thinking, fine motor skills, spatial awareness, focus & concentration. This month’s challenge is to create spooky builds. 3:30 p.m. in the Konnie Room October 15h & 22nd Acorn Circle – Local indigenous-based programs for youth ages 6-10. October 15th is “Let’s go Eeling” where kids will hear a story about eel harvesting and discuss the main idea of the story as well as make their own basket with ribbons. October 22nd is “Mulak Man” and kids will hear a story about elk hunting, try a fun quiz game and make their own leather pouch. 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the Konnie Room October 29th – Read to a Dog is an Elementary Explorers program for kids Kindergarten – 5th grade that focuses on reading confidence and fluency. At Read to a Dog, children are invited to read to therapy and R.E.A.D. certified dogs. Reading to an animal is a great way for children to build reading confidence because animals don’t mind if you mispronounce a word or miss a sentence; the dogs just love to hear kids read. Confident readers pick up more books, and the more a child reads, the better their reading fluency and comprehension becomes. Program meets in the Konnie Room at 3:30 and runs for approximately an hour. THIURSDAYS October 3rd Middle School Spooky Crafternoon – Oct. 3rd – Middle School Meet-Up is a program designed for youth 6th – 8th grade that focuses on socialization, reading, S.T.E.A.M., and crafting. Programs have all been planned by the Teen Advisory Board members. Middle School programs this month will be Crafternoon and D&D campaign. Programs runs for approximately 30 minutes. October 31st Preschool costume party at 11:00 a.m. and Mobile Dental Van visit 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. FRIDAYS October 4th Storytime is a program for preschool children ages 0-5, with a focus on pre-literacy skills. At Storytime there are fun songs, there is dancing, art projects, and work on letter recognition, practice on writing and reading awesome stories. September themes will be school related. October 11th, 25th High School Scene is a program designed for teens grade 9 – 12 that focuses on socialization, reading, S.T.E.A.M., and crafting. The programs have all been planned by the Teen Advisory Board members and this month will feature Crafternoon on the 13th and a Banned Books Party on the 27th. SATURDAYS October 26th Middle/High School Dungeons & Dragons meets from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m.
